The Accra College of Medicine, ACM, a Private Medical University has launched its Maiden SRC Week at its premises at Adjringanor in Accra with a call on stakeholders to consider tramadol abuse as a national crisis.
The Maiden ACM-SRC Week which was launched by the MP for Adentan, Hon. Yaw Buabeng Asamoah was under the theme ”Building a Healthy Society; a Healthy Lifestyle, a Healthy Lifestay.
Whilst launching the programme, the MP commended the Accra College of Medicine SRC for the bold attempt to highlight the abuse and effects of tramadol on its consumers.
Hon. Yaw Buabeng Asamoah who expressed his love for the medicine profession said the level of abuse of tramadol in recent times by most especially, the youth is alarming and needed some urgent attention.
He called on all stakeholders to take the necessary steps to halt the proliferation of this prescribed drug before it gets out of hand.
The Adentan MP also urged students of the University College to move out of their traditional comfort zone and impact society positively.
In an exclusive interview with the Health and Organizing Officer of the Accra College of Medicine, Mr Kelvin Kissiedu, he said the ACM-SRC chose to embark on an anti tramadol campaign due to its nationwide abuse and its negative health implications when the drug is abused.
He further mentioned that, as students of medicine, they consider it a priority to educate students and the youth in general on the abuse of all kinds of drugs.
According to him, the ACM-SRC will use all forms of avenue available to them to ensure that, the abuse of tramadol become a thing of the past.
Tramadol is a prescription drug used to treat severe pain. Fatal side effects can occur if one use it with alcohol, or with other drugs and could cause drowsiness or slow breathing.
Some of the activities lined up for the week long celebration includes a float and sensitization of Adjringanor community on tramadol abuse, alongside clean up exercise, cultural day, blood donation exercise, seminar, cooking competition, sports and a field trip to the Phyto-Riker Pharmaceutical Company.
However, the ACM-SRC hope to climax its maiden SRC week celebration with a donation to YOUNET Ghana, an NGO located at Dansoman, Accra.
The Accra College of Medicine which is located at the Adjringanor Community in Accra is accredited by the National Accreditation Board and the Medical and Dental Council.
